Federwitz Mission
Occasionally, we need a reminder of things that are always around us, but may be overlooked. There is a bulletin board in the lobby of the church, just to the right as you enter the worship area. This bulletin board can keep you posted on the family of Jonathan and Carrie Federwitz, who are missionaries with whom Faith Lutheran Church partners to spread the Gospel of Jesus.
Jonathan Federwitz has joint appointment with Wycliff Bible Translators and with Lutheran Bible Translators. The mission of both of these organizations is to translate the Bible into the native languages of the people who need to hear and read it. This is often a very long-term project, because many of the languages in the "Third World" areas do not have a written language. This means that the missionaries first have to learn the language, then develop a written form, and then finally begin to translate the Bible. Jonathan is a pilot, and serves by delivering missionaries and their supplies to and from the areas where they will be working. Jonathan and Carrie have lived in Papua-New Guinea for about 10 years. They keep in touch with their supporters through e-mail fliers that we receive periodically. These letters are posted on the bulletin board so that we can all keep track of what they are doing, and how their mission is progressing.
Our partnership with the Federwitz's happens in several ways. First, every Sunday we pray for them. Secondly, some of the members of Faith provide financial support for them. It is important to be aware that the Federwitz's (as well as other missionaries) receive no direct financial support from the ELCA or other large church bodies. All of their help comes from individuals who choose to support them in their mission to spread God's gospel. Some people choose to send money directly to the Federwitz's, through the Wycliff organization that manages the fund for them. If you are interested in doing that, there is information on the bulletin board to help you get started. However, Faith has set up a fund that combines the donations of many of our members, so that we are able to send a designated amount every month for their support. If you are interested in contributing to that, simply include the amount with your regular offering whenever you wish, and write on your offering envelope the amount you would like to go to the Federwitz fund. Please remember that the money for the Federwitz family is NOT part of the congregational budget. Any money you donate for them will go directly to them through this special fund. However your continued support for the general operating fund of the congregation is crucial for the operation of Faith Lutheran Church.
Mission Trips
Faith Builds Hope
Families in the Gulf Coast need help more than ever! Thousands of families lost their home when hurricanes ravaged the Mississippi Gulf Coast in recent years. Today, many displaced families still live in unsafe, temporary housing. Thrivent Builds is a program that brings Thrivent Financial for Lutherans members together with Habitat for Humanity, and other volunteers, to provide simple, decent, affordable housing for partner families. Faith Lutheran Church sent a group of volunteers to Biloxi, MS, November 2-7, 2009, to help in the volunteer effort.
